Packing Carry On Only: FAQ

I travel carry on only quite often. Between the end of February and May I can usually be found on a flight for work with just carry on luggage more weekends than not. I've also managed to pack my life into a 40L carry on backpack for 6 weeks in Europe! There are so many plus side to not having to check luggage, a few being saving time both when arriving and leaving the airport, no worry if your flights get delayed or canceled, and just having a lighter load!

While it is super convenient, there are some questions that come up regarding exactly what can go through security in your carry on luggage, and today I’m going to clear up some of the common questions for you!

Can I travel with food?

Sure can! As long as it’s not liquid. Some airports will make you take out your food when it goes through xray, but you are more than welcome to bring snacks with you! Also, be cautious if you are flying international. Most countries don’t allow things like fresh fruit or nuts through customs, and if they do make sure you are claiming them on your customs forms!

Bringing your own snacks has some major perks! It can help you be a little more healthy on the road, save a few bucks at the airport and be more eco friendly while traveling. Bringing fruit or veggies means no disposable wrapping and packing them in reusable take away containers or reusable bags helps reduce your waste greatly!

What about my razor? Can I pack it with me if I’m traveling carry on only?

You can! You can travel with a razor as long as it’s a disposable/cartridge razor (this one is great because it’s nice and tiny!). Safety and straight razors aren’t allowed!

What about my other sharp things? Tweezers, nail clippers, scissors?

Go ahead and pack them! Yes, even the scissors are allowed as long as they are under 4 inches.

Does my make up go in my quart sized bag with my liquids can it stay packed away?

Any solid and powder make up (lipsticks, bronzer/contour, eyeshadow etc.) can stay packed away in your bag when going through security as long as it’s under 12 oz. Things like liquid foundation, mascara, lip gloss and concealer are considered liquids and need to go in your quart sized bag.
